I posted on Monday about the new Nikon camera (nope, not a sponsored post, just a sentimental attachment to the company) my hubby got for me, and I’m happy to report it’s even better than I expected. It got here in plenty of time for me to have fun shooting the full moon, and even though the past few days have been gloomy, I’ve still been able to get a good feel for how good it really is. Before I get to some of the shots I’ve taken this week, here’s a rundown of the camera from the official site –
With COOLPIX P610 and its ultra-powerful 60x optical zoom lens, high-end grip-style design, GPS, built-in Wi-Fi® and Near Field Communication technology (NFC)**, plus Full HD video capabilities, a whole new world of shooting and sharing opportunities opens before you. Flip out the swiveling Vari-angle display, hold the COOLPIX P610 overhead and zoom in for an amazing close-up at concerts. Then pull out your compatible smartphone and see the shot you just took with the COOLPIX P610, right in the palm of your hand. Quickly post it to your favorite site and watch the likes roll in. When you’re traveling, built-in GPS records the coordinates of each shot you take. And for those who want creative control, the COOLPIX P610 offers full manual control and advanced shooting modes. (For those who don’t, it offers wonderful point-and-shoot ease.) Start sharing photos and videos that amaze.
Here it is on Amazon – Nikon COOLPIX P610 Digital Camera with 60x Optical Zoom and Built-In Wi-Fi (Black)
This is the tripod I use (bought it last year), mostly for the moon shots – Dolica ST-500 68-Inch Lightweight Tripod
Now, for the pictures, all taken on Auto Mode –
One of my very first shots –
A comparison – a group of leaves at a normal distance, then zoomed –
I took this Mourning Dove feather picture, just to see how clear it would be (I was standing next to it) –
Some of the gazillion full moon shots from the 22nd –
Another comparison test with a Mourning Dove on the ground outside my window, normal, then zoomed –
These shots are a bit blurry, but given that it was a gloomy, rainy day and I took them through a dirty window, I can’t really complain –
Another shot through the dirty bedroom window, but the gloom finally went away –
I also took a short video of a bird singing to me in the woods, to get a quick example –
If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m absolutely over the moon about this camera! Expect tons of pictures in future blog posts. *grin*
Lovely, Traci! I really enjoyed those.
Shayne! So great to see you pop up! Thank you very much!
Oh man! I can’t stop looking at the Moon. It’s gorgeous and your pictures are like those wallpapers. Great job with a new camera. 🙂 I love watching the Moon. I wrote a microblog too once – read when you get time 🙂

Thanks, Parul! I read your #MicroblogMonday moon post, and I completely agree – the moon definitely has moods, and watching her (especially through my lens) is extremely calming. Thanks so much for sharing the link, and for the compliment! 😀
Are you changing settings or just letting the camera autoadjust? (I’ve been trying to get good pictures of the moon with my newish DSLR and haven’t but the weather and location haven’t been super cooperative either. Maybe the Libra full moon. :. Sky pics are something I want. Soooo badly.)
I love the picture of the moon that’s very clear and, of course, all the birds. 🙂 Looks like fun!
At the moment, I’m essentially letting the camera do its thing. So far, it’s making the adjustments quicker and more accurately than I could. I have started to play around a bit with the aperture settings, but I haven’t gone too crazy yet. I hope awesome sky pictures are in your immediate future! And thanks, Em! 😀
Oh, I love a good zoom. I got a superzoom back in 2008, when 18x was about as good as you could get, to go on safari. 60x? I have zoom envy. (I did a normal tree shot/zoom in comparison then too. https://aseparatelife.wordpress.com/2011/11/11/clickety-click/ )
Loving the birds in the snow too. They all look so exotic to this kiwi.
Those are some awesome shots on your post, Mali! I hear you on the zoom envy – I’ve been watching some FB friends with amazing cameras over the past year, and gone completely green-faced over their equipment. 😀
Beautiful! Love the closeups, amazing zoom detail. The feather and the frost is just amazing, so many tiny details on each blade of grass! And the moon… so pretty. Love the results you are getting from your new prize!
Thank you, Jess! I’ve had it for three weeks now, and I’m still having a hard time putting it down. 😀
