The Dangers of Texting Before Coffee

She heard the familiar trill of her cell phone, and grabbed for it from where it had slipped down underneath the blankets. After she read the message, she took a deep breath, and decided maybe it really was time to start asking some tough questions. She quickly tapped at the keyboard before she lost her nerve…

“Okay, but I’m not sure exactly what you mean by that. I know we haven’t been dating for a long time, and I hate having to do this through text, but what are you after? Is this something long term for you? Am I just a fling – which is fine, because I’m not all that sure I want to be serious yet myself. After all, I do have other options open to me at the moment, but if you’re thinking you want to start being exclusive or something, I’d like to know sooner rather than later, before those options disappear.

I mean, I want to make sure we’re on the same page with all of this, you know? Yes, I know it sounds silly, but I kind of have this mental checklist of things I want to discuss, but just never seems to be the right time. And again, I’m sorry to hit you with this through text, and I’d much rather be doing this in person, because it’s so hard to hear tone and get how people are responding to you when it’s on a screen. But I figured since you mentioned it first it meant you wanted to talk about our relationship.

Now that I’m thinking about it, maybe when you get back from doing errands, or whatever it is that you’re doing this morning, we could sit down with a couple of cups of coffee and really talk about what we both want, and where to go from here. Does that sound good, or would you rather just keep this as a text conversation for now?”

She waiting anxiously, staring at those three bouncing dots for what seemed to be an eternity, until the message finally appeared.

“When I asked what you wanted, I meant at the store, You’d said something last night about having a grocery list…”
