This past Friday (the 26th) was National Dog Day. Naturally, I spent it at the Veterinary Hospital with our dog, Sandy. He had an infected gland, but thanks to the kind ministrations of the wonderful people there, he’s feeling much better. At any rate, here’s a bit more about the holiday (which I will hopefully remember in advance of the day next year) from the official National Dog Day website –
National Dog Day is celebrated August 26th annually and was founded in 2004 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige, also the founder of National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day and National Cat Day and many more philanthropic days to bring attention to the plight of animals and encourage adoption. The date of August 26th is significant, as it’s the date that Colleen’s family adopted her first dog “Sheltie” when Colleen was 10 years old.
Here’s a list of 20 ways to celebrate, also from the official site –
- Adopt a dog from your local shelter or pure breed rescue organization. Volunteer at your local shelter and offer to walk a dog or play with a dog, clean cages or anything else they need help with.
- Have a safety check of your home to make sure itβs safe for your dog and others.
- Donate blankets, food and toys to animal welfare organizations.
- Organize a peaceful demonstration in front of your community pet store that sells puppies.
- Write your Congressman and ask that he/she support the ban of Puppy Mills and Gas Chambers in your state.
- Send a dog related gift to a friend or family member!
- Have a National Dog Day party and invite all your friends and their dogs!
- Spend the day taking photos of your dog and then enter our photo contest!
- Buy an official National Dog Day Tee here and sport it proudly!
- Assist an ill or elderly neighbor by walking their dog.
- Have a portrait painted of your dog to suspend the fleeting magic of dogdom.
- Buy your dog a fun new dog toy…or two…or five.
- Give your dog some fun exercise by taking him or her to a doggy play resort.
- Brush your dog to eliminate excess fur.
- Give your dog a massage or holistic spa treatment.
- Teach your dog a new trick.
- Buy your dog a fashionable collar and leash.
- Hire a professional pet photographer for a fun photo shoot.
- Take your dog to the beach.
- Say “BECAUSE DOGS” all day, every time someone says hello!
Here’s a shot of Sandy and Sid yesterday, celebrating the fact that the puppy felt better –
However you celebrate/celebrated, I hope it was happy!

First, this is not a passive voice. Next, I am writing in an active voice. Therefore, my SEO will stop telling me how to write. Furthermore, these sentences are also shorter than twenty words. Rather, stop being so controlling. Especially since most of the sentences in this post are not mine. I will keep going while until you turn green. I can’t believe this is still orange. Glad Sandy is feeling better. It’s always hard when they aren’t. A beautiful photo of two beautiful friends.
Yes, it’s tough, especially since they can’t use words to tell us exactly what’s wrong. Thanks!
Beautiful photo and yes, some fun things you have shared there π
Good to know little pup is doing better.
Thank you, Parul! I’m thinking of putting my own list together for next year – assuming I remember ahead of time. π
I love Sandy! <3
Luci got her toy and goodies, a good brushing and lots of playtime with Mommeee. π
He’s really an awesome dog – even the vet commented on how wonderful he was.
Lucky Luci – sounds like a perfect Dog Day!
I love the photo. I am more of a cat person, though I grew up with dogs as working, farm dogs, and I did love them.
Thanks, Mali. I’m more of a cat person too, but Sandy is pretty much feline-sized, so he almost counts as a kitty.
Hi, Sandy and Sid! I hope you enjoyed your day. My Dexter says “woof!”
Because dogs.
Dexter is very well spoken! Hope he had a pawsitively wonderful day!
What a cute dog. I’m definitely a dog person.
Had a conversation with someone recently, and I said I was a cat person who loves dogs. π
I hope your dog is feeling better. No dog here, though I often think about getting one. I want a dog whenever the weather is nice and I have time on my hands. And then when it’s snowing or I’m stressed with time, I think about what I would do with a dog in the mix. I want to love on the dog, but I don’t want to add something big to my plate. And a dog feels big, no?
A dog definitely feels big. In fact, we weren’t looking to have a dog again (lost our last one in 2012), but circumstances intervened, and we took over ownership of Sandy from my mother. Nowadays, even with the borderline emergency vet trip, it doesn’t seem big at all – he’s just naturally a part of the family.
GLad your pup is feeling better! Such a sweet picture. I love all the ways to celebrate, although I posted a picture of my cat to celebrate national dog day, because we no longer have dogs. Someday, someday. π
Hey, our cat acts like a dog (we even take him out on leash to do his business – an indoor cat with no litter box. π ) so I see no problem with posting your cat’s picture! And thank you, Jess!
