MM – National Pet Day

Today is National Pet Day!

From the official site

National Pet Day was founded in 2006 by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert, Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige, to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters and rescues all around the globe.

This is what our two pets, Sid (short for Obsidian, who adopted us in 2004) and Sandy (rescue dog named before we got him, who was abandoned on a beach) are doing to celebrate –

Animal Rescue Site

These are a handful of the suggestions from the official page (click here to see the complete list) –

~ Adopt a pet from your local shelter or pure breed rescue organization.

~ Volunteer at your local shelter and offer to care for the animals.

~ Donate blankets, food and toys to a favorite animal welfare organization.

~ Assist an ill, elderly or a financially struggling neighbor or friend by purchasing pet food, hay or needed items for their pets.

~ Buy your pet a fun new toy….or two…or five.

However you celebrate, I hope it’s a happy one for you and the pets in your life!

  1. Adorable! I think that’s a great way to celebrate!

I didn’t realize it was national pet day, but I did put a new plant in my fish’s tank. (The old plant was dying.) So Frida’s day has mostly been occupied by cautiously exploring (and re-exploring) the new plant, which is pretty much the routine any time something in the tank changes. πŸ™‚

    1. Great timing for the new plant, Stephanie! I miss having fish – we’ve done both the small Beta bowls, and the huge tank with tons of varieties.Today might be a good day for me to think about taking the plunge again. πŸ˜‰

Love your fish’s name, by the way!

  2. Happy National Pet Day! Your kitty looks like my sweet toothless kitty. I love when they put their paw around their faces all curled up like that. And your dog, such a cutie!

    1. Thanks, Jess. Yep, Sid acts like the big, tough tom cat, but every time he wraps his paw around his face, he turns into a little kitten. Your kitty sounds adorable. And I’ll tell Sandy you said he was a cutie. πŸ˜€

  3. So cute! Sometimes I wish I were a well-loved cat or dog- all that sleep looks heavenly! I do have a strange little cross-eyed cat. I love her- she’s very sweet. πŸ™‚

    1. I’ve wished the same thing before, Catwoman. It’s so calming to watch them peacefully slumber, even if I can’t join them at that particular moment. πŸ™‚

  4. In Truman’s eyes, every day is National Pet Day. And because every day is NPD, he deserves extra treats every day.

They’re so cute curled up next to one another.

    1. Truman sounds very wise.

We’ve had Sandy less than a year, and as a rescue, he’s had some trust issues (including being intimidated by Sid). I’ve noticed that as time goes on, he inches closer and closer to the cat when they’re sacked out near each other. It never fails to make my heart melt.

  5. Oh no! I missed pet day?! Nevermind. I am going to make up for it all the days of the rest of the year πŸ˜‰
And what lovely photographs of your pets! πŸ™‚
