Self hate isn’t romantic

A month or two ago, I heard the song, “Tangled Up in You” by Staind, and immediately fell in love with it. I thought about posting it on my hubby’s Facebook wall for our 25th anniversary, so I went looking for an official video. Apparently there isn’t one, but I found this lyric video –

After watching it, I knew I couldn’t use it as a celebration of our love. One line, nine words long, ruined it for me.

“You’re the only thing that I like about me.”

Yeah, yeah, I know – there is a strong possibility that I’m overreacting, but that phrase irks the bejesus out of me. The rest of the lyrics are the basic but sweet, “you’re the good when things are bad” type, but that line stood out as unnecessarily self-loathing amidst such other positive declarations. I’ve done the self hate thing, and there’s absatively posolutely no way you can make a relationship work when you’re in that state of mind.

As far as sweet, sappy love songs go, I much prefer the one that we danced to at our wedding.

Oh, and happy 25th plus one month anniversary, babe. I love you.
