It’s somewhat ironic, in an Alanis Morissette kinda way, that as a writer, I had a hard time writing a Dark Moon Release spell. When I first started studying Wicca, all the books (yes, back in the dark days before the interwebz was a thing) had beautiful, poetic spells that I felt needed to be committed to memory for the magic to be effective. I finally relented, and began to copy them on index card “cheat sheets” so I wouldn’t flub up the words and end up like Ash.
Wiseman: When you removed the book from the cradle, did you speak the words?
Ash: Yeah, basically.
Wiseman: Did you speak the exact words?
Ash: Look, maybe I didn’t say every tiny syllable, no. But basically I said them, yeah.
Now, all these years later, I have a hard time casting a spell in any form that resembles a poem, or anything that requires memorization. I’ve been finding as I move into my Maven years (otherwise known as Crone years, but being a big believer in always adding awesome alliteration, I prefer Maiden, Mother, Maven). I work much better making stuff up on the fly.
Tonight is the Dark Scorpio Moon, which is a perfect time to do a spell to honor my upcoming hysterectomy. I decided to create one with a minimum of words, so I could spend less time worrying about doing it “right” and more time focusing on the intent.
Here is the graphic I created (using a picture I took of the September 2015 Full Moon, darkened with a filter, since I can’t snag a picture of the actual dark moon). Please shout out in the comments if you have a favorite release spell, or dark moon ritual – I’d love to hear them!
